Member Price: $78 – $93
Inspired by founder Bob MacDonnell’s deep love of Italian wines and crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, this wine is both powerful and poetic. The grapes are co-fermented at harvest for seamless integration resulting in a plush, rich wine that trasports you to the heart of Italy.
Sangiovese thrives on our estate, where the terroir mirrors the sun-drenched hillsides of central Italy. The Cabernet brings structure and depth, while the Sangiovese adds lift, brightness, and a savory edge. Together, they create a wine that’s vibrant and expressive—a heartfelt nod to heritage, with a distinctly Californian voice, and a way for us to continue to honor our patriarch vintage after vintage.
The Proprietary family of wines are comprised of unique blends and varietals sourced entirely from our Rutherford Estate. Crafted with balance and a dedication to expressing our terroir, these wines represent an annual “homage” to the vintage and are made exclusively for members and guests of Round Pond Estate and not available elsewhere.
Tasting Notes
This wine opens with bright aromas of crushed cherry, raspberry, and a touch of dried sage. Fresh red currant and wild strawberry unfold on the palate, layered with deeper notes of black plum and a hint of cocoa. The Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure, while Sangiovese brings vibrant acidity and lift. Silky tannins frame a smooth, lingering finish. Balanced and expressive, this wine is delicious now and will continue to evolve gracefully.
Vineyard Notes
The 2023 vintage marked the end of our three-year drought, bringing nearly 30” of rainfall that contributed to the revitalization of our soil profiles and fostering robust canopy growth. The vintage was one of the mildest in the last 10 years which provided a long hangtime, allowing full flavor development leading to very expressive flavors and aromas. As soon as the fruit set after flowering, extensive hand work began in the vineyard opening the canopy to allow for full sun exposure on the fruit. This leads to full, concentrated flavor and ensures the fruit is as expressive as possible. The 2023 vintage will be one for the ages and we feel these wines truly capture the exceptional year.
