A classic Bordeaux varietal and often used in blending, we reserve the most unique and promising of our Petit Verdot lots for select single-varietal offerings to give this alluring varietal its due. This club-exclusive wine introduces it’s own personality when highlighted as a single varietal. Inky and dark, it’s naturally high acidity balances the wines richness allowing enjoyment upon release and a conversation starter around the table.
Tasting Notes
Deep garnet in the glass, it opens with layered aromas of black plum, blueberry, and violet, accented by subtle hints of graphite and espresso. On the palate, dense, dark fruit flavors unfold alongside notes of cocoa and warm spice. The firm yet polished tannins create remarkable structure, while a vein of bright acidity lifts and balances the wine’s richness. Elegant and expressive, this Petit Verdot will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade.
Vineyard Notes
The 2022 vintage was the third in a string of drought years. Despite the drought, there was well-timed Spring rain that boosted the vines’ vigor allowing for nicely established canopies for both shade and photosynthesis. The weather remained relatively mild and even, with routine fog patterns cooling nighttime and morning temperatures. At Labor Day, a significant heat wave impacted the entire Western States. At Round Pond, we sustained some heat damage but mostly came out unscathed thanks to our healthy vine canopies and overhead sprinklers. Round Pond’s “California sprawl” trellis systems provide excellent vine balance and diverse sun exposures.
