"Richly flavored with polished tannins, this wine offers dark fruits, spiced chocolate, wet tobacco and a long finish. Graphite emerges on further sipping." 93 Points, Elaine Chukan Brown, Wine Enthusiast
Lifted aromas of mixed berries, orange marmalade, and herbs de Provence waft enticingly from the glass. Rich flavors of blackberry, olallieberry, plum, and black currant are met with notes of cocoa nib and caramel with a touch of baking spice upon the finish. Velvety tannins and fresh acidity lead to a juicy, long finish that will continue to age gracefully.
The 2022 vintage was the third in a string of drought years. Despite the drought, there was well-timed Spring rain that boosted the vines’ vigor allowing for nicely established canopies for both shade and photosynthesis. The weather remained relatively mild and even, with routine fog patterns cooling nighttime and morning temperatures. At Labor Day, a significant heat wave impacted the entire Western States. At Round Pond, we sustained some heat damage but mostly came out unscathed thanks to our healthy vine canopies and overhead sprinklers. Round Pond’s “California sprawl” trellis systems provide excellent vine balance and diverse sun exposures.
The soil of our Oakville site lies on a gravelly base overlaid with alluvial soils washed down from the Mayacamas mountain range. The soil provides excellent water drainage, while a subtle slope allows excess water to flow into the Napa River; a perfect combination for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. Fog lingers later in the morning and arrives earlier in the evening, leading to slightly cooler days and nights, producing wines with an elegant flavor profile and structure. Sourced from the younger vines at MBar Ranch that feature three different clones, 15, 685 and the most notable Clone 6, this vineyard designate wine showcases the excellent balance of the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal with the unique microclimate, soil, and terroir of MBar Ranch.
