2023 Proprietary Syrah
Member Price: $66 – $74
Our Syrah is a wine of contrast and character—crafted in a hybrid style that bridges the boldness of Napa Valley with the finesse of Old World tradition. Grown on our estate, this club-exclusive wine is a rare expression of Syrah’s full potential.
We created this wine to explore how Syrah could thrive in Rutherford’s warmth while still honoring the varietal’s roots. The result is a wine that’s fruit-forward and richly textured, yet elegant and restrained. Aromatics lean exotic—violets, black olive, and spice—while the palate delivers dark fruit, silky tannins, and a long, savory finish.
The Proprietary family of wines are comprised of unique blends and varietals sourced entirely from our Rutherford Estate. Crafted with balance and a dedication to expressing our terroir, these wines represent an annual “homage” to the vintage and are made exclusively for members and guests of Round Pond Estate and not available elsewhere.
Tasting Notes
Expressive and effusive floral aromatics mingle with notes of strawberry and a touch of anise. The fruit for this wine was picked early to maintain freshness, which comes through clearly with a fruit-forward entry teeming with Bing cherry, ripe plum, and raspberry. Deep notes of cassis and black pepper are accented with a touch of tapenade. Made in the Rhône style, this Syrah offers soft tannins that linger on the palate leading to a well-textured finish.
Vineyard Notes
The 2023 vintage marked the end of our three-year drought, bringing nearly 30” of rainfall that contributed to the revitalization of our soil profiles and fostering robust canopy growth. The vintage was one of the mildest in the last 10 years which provided a long hangtime, allowing full flavor development leading to very expressive flavors and aromas. As soon as the fruit set after flowering, extensive hand work began in the vineyard opening the canopy to allow for full sun exposure on the fruit. This leads to full, concentrated flavor and ensures the fruit is as expressive as possible. The 2023 vintage will be one for the ages and we feel these wines truly capture the exceptional year.
Winemaker Notes
We employ a combination of modern & long-established winemaking techniques in the pursuit of making this wine its best. Traditional maceration with stem inclusion on select lots increases earthy notes while the contemporary approach of including de-stemmed fruit enhances the bold fruit flavors.
