2022 Rosato di Nebbiolo

75% Nebbiolo, 25% Syrah | Floral notes of rose petal mingle with ripe raspberry and watermelon aromas. Flavors of stone fruit and strawberry with a touch of apricot are balanced with incredible acidity that leads to an extremely satisfying finish. Pair with summer dishes like prosciutto salad or peach and burrata caprese.

The mother grape to such revered wines as Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo finds its own Californian personality here in the vineyards of Round Pond. As founder Bob MacDonnell’s favorite varietal, we grow some of our Nebbiolo specifically for this Rosato. At harvest, the varietals designated for the Rosato are picked early for lower sugars. Aged exclusively in stainless steel, our goal is to make a Rosato with bright berry and wild strawberry flavors with wonderfully mouthwatering acidity.

Vineyard Notes

The 2022 vintage was the third in a string of drought years. Despite the drought, there was well-timed Spring rain that boosted the vines’ vigor allowing for nicely established canopies for both shade and photosynthesis. The weather remained relatively mild and even, with routine fog patterns cooling nighttime and morning temperatures. At Labor Day, a significant heat wave impacted the entire Western States. At Round Pond, we sustained some heat damage but mostly came out unscathed thanks to our healthy vine canopies and overhead sprinklers. Round Pond’s “California sprawl” trellis systems provide excellent vine balance and diverse sun exposures.
