Only in those vintages perfectly suited to Petite Sirah will we bottle this elusive, tantalizing varietal. It’s necessary to use the utmost finesse and discretion when working with this varietal, but the resulting wine is supremely elegant and shows beautiful blue fruit – making all the effort worthwhile.

Tasting Notes

Aromatic notes of strawberry and plum are balanced with savory notes of black olive and a touch of black pepper. Blackberry compote and boysenberry notes are complemented by bittersweet chocolate and a touch of Rutherford dust. Fine, silky tannins lend to a lush palate with well-balanced acidity leading to a lingering finish.

Vineyard Notes

The 2022 vintage was the third in a string of drought years. Despite the drought, there was well-timed Spring rain that boosted the vines’ vigor allowing for nicely established canopies for both shade and photosynthesis. The weather remained relatively mild and even, with routine fog patterns cooling nighttime and morning temperatures. At Labor Day, a significant heat wave impacted the entire Western States. At Round Pond, we sustained some heat damage but mostly came out unscathed thanks to our healthy vine canopies and overhead sprinklers. Round Pond’s “California sprawl” trellis systems provide excellent vine balance and diverse sun exposures.

Winemaker Notes

Only in those vintages perfectly suited to Petite Sirah will we bottle this elusive, tantalizing varietal. When making wine from this delicate fruit, we will use tall, thin tanks to decrease skin to juice contact and limit the time in tank to 4 - 6 days to enhance its voluputousness. It’s necessary to use the utmost finesse and discretion when working with this varietal, but the resulting wine is supremely elegant and shows beautiful blue fruit - making all the effort worthwhile.
