Our Winery & Garden

Our Winery

From the vineyard to the winery, great winemaking reflects an intimate, personal touch. This touch can be seen in the way our estate vines are pruned to allow the sun to dapple the grapes, or in our careful selection of new oak from different forests in France. In this spirit, we believe in the importance of controlling every step of the winemaking process to ensure consistently wonderful wines with each new vintage. To do just that, we began the construction of a new state-of-the-art winery in 2005.

Completed in July of 2007, our winery and hospitality facility embodies the realization of a longtime dream for our family. Located on our Rutherford estate, the winery is surrounded by our vineyards, allowing the fruit to arrive cool and in pristine condition at harvest. At the winery, these exceptional grapes benefit from a careful blend of artisan techniques and cutting-edge technology. This approach includes hand-sorting the grapes twice, and fermenting and aging specific vineyard blocks individually to maintain their distinctive character. To further ensure quality, this time and labor-intensive approach benefits from the use of select technologies such as our winery’s custom-built fermentors, which continuously regulate temperatures to the ideal level.

In addition to being the perfect home for our small-lot winemaking, our winery is also a place where we can share our excellent wines in a beautiful and comfortable setting. With a lovely second story tasting lounge and a covered terrace offering panoramic views of the vineyards and the Mayacamas Mountains, our winery makes an ideal destination in the heart of the Napa Valley. We invite you to explore our delicious tour and tasting options!

Our Garden

After years of producing organic fruits and vegetables in the MacDonnell family garden, we’ve decided to bring this tradition to the Round Pond Winery. As such, now open to our guests is our 200’ x 50’ biodynamic vegetable garden behind the winery crush pad.

The site is enclosed with a unique fence made from recycled grape stakes and pine teepee poles, some as tall as 27’. Not being able to resist the fact that we have a backhoe available, each bed is being double dug and amended with our own biodynamic compost. The beds are then hand turned as we incorporate organic fertilizers and rock minerals. We conserve water by using an automated drip system throughout the garden.

The main purpose of the garden is to supply produce to the winery and olive mill kitchens. We understand the importance of providing quality food with quality wines and olive oils, that’s why we’ve chosen to grow our produce onsite using biodynamic methods. The other reason for the garden is to share this process of growing food with our visitors.

The garden is filled with beds of potatoes, greens, beans, onions, corn, squash, peppers, leeks, beets and of course tomatoes. But just not any tomato, this will be the exclusive home of the Round Pond Red tomato. This flavorful red tomato is one I’ve been working on for years and she is ready for her debut. I expect there will be many loyal fans of this tasty fruit after tasting it at the winery paired with the 2006 Round Pond cabernet.

Another unique aspect of this garden is our sensory plantings for both cabernet and sauvignon blanc. These garden beds have plantings of fruits, herbs and vegetables that describe the flavors and aromas found in these wine varietals. Along with the descriptor beds there are garden plantings of the vegetables and herbs that have a flavor affinity with cabernet and sauvignon blanc, i.e. what tastes good with these wines.

If this description sounds intriguing you’ll just have to come by the winery and taste some wine, eat some fresh picked produce and take a tour of the winery and gardens. We'll look forward to see you!
