Robert Parker's Wine Advocate Scores our Rutherford Cabs all 91+!

2010 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon – 92 points
"The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is full of freshly cut flowers, violets, menthol crushed rocks and dark red cherries. There is a level of freshness and pure vibrancy in the 2010 that previous vintages don’t have, most likely the result of the long, cool growing season. The balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is first-class. Nothing is out of place. In short, the 2010 Estate is gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023."

2009 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon – 92 points
"Round Pond’s 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is pure grace and silkiness on the palate. Sweet floral and spice notes meld into expressive red berries as this refined, beautifully proportioned wine shows off its pedigree. The 2009 has a little more textural depth and immediacy than the 2008, but a touch less grip and overall tension. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020."

2008 Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon – 91 points
"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate offers up sweet red berries, freshly cut flowers and spices. This round, supple Cabernet is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. There is plenty of early appeal here. Sweet floral and spiced notes add lift on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018."

Robert Parkers Wine Advocate scores our Reserve Cabs 91+

2010 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – 93 points
"The estate’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Bovet brings together the best qualities of this site and the vintage. Dark raspberries, flowers, spices, and licorice are all wrap together in this silky Cabernet. The 2010 is at once finessed but also large-scaled. Interestingly, the aromas and flavors are a bit brighter than in the regular bottling. Sweet floral and minty notes are layered into a textured finish supported by firm yet elegant tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024."

2008 Reserve Bovet Cabernet Sauvignon – 91 points
"The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Bovet is a bit richer, darker and silkier than the straight Cabernet. Iron, smoke and sweet red berries are all woven together in this attractive, mid-weight Cabernet. Hints of mocha and chocolate develop with time in the glass. The Reserve has a little more grip and punch than the straight Estate bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021."

Stephen Tanzer gives our 2009 Reserve Cab 91

2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
"Saturated bright ruby-red.  Deeper and richer on the nose than the Rutherford bottling, offering scents of dark raspberry, mocha and loam.  Then broad, rich and classically dry, with a medicinal quality to the berry flavors and a strong impression of Rutherford dust.  Already makes for a major mouthful of cabernet, but the big, chewy tannins call for patience."

Stephen Tanzer gives our 2010 Rutherford Cab 90!

2010 Round Pond Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Rutherford ($50)
"Cool, soil-driven aromas and flavors of blue fruits, licorice and underbrush struck me as quite claret-like. At once glyceral and fresh, offering lovely depth and sweetness in the middle, with bright tannins giving the wine more obvious focus than the 2009 release. Shows a distinct ferrous quality. Finishes with building ripe tannins. This should age very well. In comparison to the 2009s, the estate's 2010 cabernets are more acid- than tannin-driven, according to winemaker Brown. 90"

Our 2009 Rutherford Cab makes the "Recommends List" by SF Chronicle

Napa Cabernet is typically our biggest and most pivotal tasting of the year. Our panel considered some 60 wines from the 2009 vintage in a range of prices.

We found wines that exemplified the power of Napa and the freshness and aging potential of great Cabernet. In particular, there was a surge of quality from some of the valley's most established names. That includes wines like the Robert Mondavi Cabernet, which you might say started it all in Napa's modern era, and the estate bottle from J. Davies, which is Schramsberg's line of red wines.

Below are top choices from the panel and other recent tastings, representing a cross-section of Napa's best from a memorable vintage.

2009 Round Pond Estate Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon ($50, 14.5%): The MacDonnell family's site in the core of Rutherford again yielded a terrific value of a wine (also true of their $30 bottle aged in old wood and using some bought fruit). 2009 was a tighter, more focused effort for Round Pond, but winemaker Brian Brown dialed back the evidence of oak to let clean black cherry, chicory and dust notes shine. It's still a notably ripe creation, but with great savory touches - dried herb, pencil shaving.

San Francisco Chronicle Reccomends our 09 Napa Valley Cab

Our 08 Reserve Cab gets 91 from Wine Spectator

SF Chronicle: "Napa's 2009's herald what great Cabernet's can be"

There's debate these days as to what makes for a great vintage. In some minds it might be a year like 2007 in Napa Valley, brimming with warmth and sun. Or perhaps 2008, which enjoyed that ripeness although in a markedly smaller, frost-shrunken crop.

Then there was 2009, a quieter year in the weather charts - cooler days, with a few sweaty exceptions in midsummer, and a long, mostly mild stretch to the finish ( It marked the start of a cooler three-year cycle that we've been discussing for a while, and will be for a while longer as the 2010s and 2011s appear. If 2007 and 2008 rewarded a full-bore approach to Cabernet in Napa, 2009 brought something a bit more shaded in its tones, a bit more complex.

Up the chain, the usual evidence of ambition in the cellar - fancy oak, more extraction, flavors that pushed into deep black fruit - was more prevalent. But even in these, the nuance of the vintage could frequently be seen. Wines like Round Pond's estate bottling and Chappellet's Pritchard Hill certainly aren't shy, but in 2009 they showed exemplary finesse

We are excited to announce that our 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon made teh Top 100 Wines List by the San Francisco Chronicle.

"The MacDonnell family's estate wine is in great form. But they and winemaker Brian Brown deserve extra credit for their red label; this less-expensive bottle sourced partially from other vineyards offers instant enjoyment. Fleshy, ripe and brimming with licorice and dark plum, it provides an early-drinking pleasure that's a great preview of 2010." - Jon Bonne

"2004 Round Pond Estate Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon ($60).  In addition to its olive oils and its Nebbiolo, this Rutherford estate prides itself on plush, impressively ripe Cabernet.  This one opens with great graphite and violet overtones, then buoyant cassis matched with dried herbs and plenty of oak toast.  There's lots of nuance amid a ton of dark fruit that's pushed just to the very edge of ripeness."

Napa Valley’s Acme Fine Wines praises 2002 Cabernet.

"Cary Gott, winemaker at Pillar Rock, is also the winemaker behind this new estate's terroir inspired wines. The MacDonnell family practices sustainable farming in the heart of Rutherford and truly gets it where winegrowing is concerned. Good land and good farming provide the opportunity for better than good fruit. Add a winemaker who pays attention to showcasing what mother earth provides him with and the recipe for goodness just got better. Round Pond's classically characteristic Rutherford cabernet brings layers of ripe, dark cherries and a hint of anise to the fine-grained tannins that round out the mouth-feel."

St. Louis Eats and Drinks recommends 2007 Estate Sauvignon Blanc.

July 6, 2008 - The Round Pond 2007 Sauvignon Blanc was recently recommended as a great summer wine In St. Louis Eats and Drinks with Joe and Ann Pollack.  In their column This Week's Wine, Joe and Ann described the wine:

"The wine is beautifully balanced, with a soft, mellow note that restrains the citrus flavors from the dominant position they often take. Round Pond is a round wine, with no rough edges, a smooth finish and a fine accompaniment to fish, or to chilled roast chicken, as I sampled it over dinner. No wood aging, no malolactic fermentation made for a bright, delicious wine."
